Local Missions: ATL18 – Monday – 3.26.18

As the cold wind blew the blossoms to the ground, we started our first day of Local Missions in Atlanta at 7 Bridges Ministry. We brought lots of donations: food, water, diapers, and laundry detergent. At their instructions, we divided into groups to make sandwiches and packed food for 150 people. Then we made sure each of the bags contained cookies, a bag of popcorn, a sandwich, and a bottle of water so it would be a nice meal. After that, we formed in a big circle and prayed before we hopped onto the bus to minister under the bridges. As we drove to downtown Atlanta with all the towering modern buildings, we stopped under the bridges underneath the interstate. While I felt like we were freezing to death, I saw several tents in front of me on the field under the bridge. I could not imagine how they live in the tents in such sad conditions. We dropped two bags of food at each tent. Then we prayed and hugged some of the people. Before we headed back to the school, we gave out food to people at an apartment building where we met Mrs. Houston, a lady that radiated with joy. Each of us came to her and gave her big hug, and she said she could feel each of our hearts when she hugged us. Even though I felt bad for all those homeless people, I am so thankful that we got the chance to help our neighbors out as the Bible commands us:
“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39
