Whilst Christmas can be an exciting time full of gifts and good food, it’s also a time of giving and caring for those in your community who are less fortunate. For those who are not as privileged, Christmas can be an exceptionally tough time and whether they are facing loneliness overseas, financial difficulties, or illness, it’s important to support the community during Christmas time.
There are plenty of ways to help, from the tiny things that’ll put a smile on a stranger’s face to bigger projects that you can invest real time in. Depending on what you can manage, here are some ways in which you can give back during the festive season.
Take part in a gift drive
For those who want to contribute to something big, take part in a gift drive for your local community. During these drives, you can collect anything from toys to food, clothes, and other essentials that will help disadvantaged families.
These drives can be done in person or online, with in-person drives requiring a lot of logistical consideration, planning, and marketing know-how. Online drives are easier for those who are new to the project but will still need solid marketing to gain traction. Once collected and delivered, you will have contributed a huge amount to community wellbeing over the holidays.
Light switch-on
Who says your community light switch-on has to match the razzle and dazzle of Times Square? Do your version and decorate your garden with outdoor Christmas lights. Then invite residents of your street for some mulled wine and mince pies before the big switch-on. It doesn’t have to be a showstopper; the most important thing is bringing the community together for some festive cheer.
Spend time with loved ones
It might seem like a no-brainer but dedicating some quality time to your family and loved ones over Christmas is what the festive season is all about. Turn off other distractions, don’t overbook your calendar, and immerse yourself fully into family traditions. This is the perfect time to rekindle relationships, make beautiful memories and even discover some new traditions.
With many people taking extended breaks from work, seize the opportunity to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a while. And with many also returning to their hometowns for Christmas, plan a reunion with old friends, and relive the good times together.
Volunteer
There’s no shortage of volunteering work over Christmas. Food banks, local charities, and events are always on the lookout. Give them a few hours of your time and support the community whilst also meeting new people, making new experiences, and discovering new interests at the same time. Leave with a wider, community-centric perspective that will give Christmas a whole new meaning.
