Novels and movies are great on their own. However, oftentimes we see the news that a certain movie that is about to be released has been adapted from a book. Many people who have read the book already, become skeptical and think that the movie won’t be any good. And honestly, they are not to be blamed – after all, there are more than a few movies that were adapted from books and they were poorly executed.
For sure, changing a story from a book to a movie is no easy feat. But, there are some exceptions to this and there are some movies that have done justice to the books. And no, The Notebook is not the only movie adapted from a book that is worth watching. We have compiled a list of movies that are equally as good as their book counterparts.
Before getting to the list, we thought we might discuss where you can watch these movies. Plenty of ISPs offer TV plans along with internet services, so that’s where you can start looking. Particularly, Xfinity TV Plans are very impressive in that they have a wonderful channel lineup and you are sure to find multiple channels to watch movies.
Putting that aside, let’s take a look at the movies that should be on your watch list.
Little Women (2019)
Little Women is a popular novel written by Louisa May Alcott. It was originally published in two volumes, in 1868 and 1869. We’re sure you already know how popular the novel is and how many movie adaptations have followed it too. The movie that we will be talking about here is the one that was released in 2019.
The movie goes in such a way that Jo is reflecting on her past and telling us the story of the March sisters: Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth. Each sister has a different ambition and a different personality, which is what makes this story so worthwhile.
The basic point or theme of this story is how these 4 sisters transition from girls to women and how each of them finds their own way in life and learns to love. As their father is away serving for the Union Army in the American Civil War, the girls are learning to cope without their father.
As they continue to make friends and mingle with other people, they find love, and unfortunately, they also come to face some tragedies along the way. Overall, the story is a good coming-of-age story and the movie portrayed it very well.
Atonement (2007)
Atonement is a novel written by Ian McEwan published in 2001. The movie adapted from this book is also titled ‘Atonement’ and it was released in 2007. The story follows Briony Tallis, a thirteen-year-old aspiring writer, her older sister Cecilia Tallis, and Robbie Turner, the son of a family servant.
Cecilia and Robbie fall in love with each other yet they haven’t actually confessed to each other, much less tell anyone else. Briony happens to catch both of them at the wrong times more than once and misunderstands the situation every time.
Unfortunately, Briony finds an opportunity to frame Robbie for a crime he didn’t do and get him arrested. She is convinced that she has done the right thing and Cecilia comes to hate her for it. Whatever happens next, you will have to find out by watching the movie and maybe even reading the book. Needless to say, it is a great story and a great movie that you have to watch!
Wonder (2017)
Wonder is a children’s novel written by R. J. Palacio and published in 2012. The movie based on this book was released in 2017. The story follows August Pullman, nicknamed Auggie, a 10-year-old living in Upper Manhattan. Auggie has a genetic condition, Treacher Collins syndrome, and it has left his face disfigured for life.
After having home-schooled him for some years now, his parents decide that he needs to grow in the real world as well and so, they enroll him in 5th grade at Beecher Prep, a private school. Auggie has an older sister named Olivia, nicknamed Via, as well.
As much as Auggie tries not to draw attention to himself, unfortunately, he fails at this. And this leads to bullying from his classmates, but he does make some friends along the way too. As the movie progresses, we see how Auggie and his family struggle with the attention he’s getting, good or bad, and how he learns to stand up for himself.
It is a very heartwarming film that was wonderfully done and you will definitely need to grab a tissue box before sitting down to watch it.
The Godfather (1972)
This movie is based on a book of the same name written by Mario Puzo and published in 1969. The movie inspired by this book was later released in 1972. The story follows the Corleone family, one of five families of the New York Mafia, and how they have been fighting the other families in the years after the Second World War. After the head of the family Vito Corleone is shot, his two sons, Santino and Michael must step in to run the family.
Due to Santino’s hot-headed behavior and Michael’s cunning, both of them are able to kill off the drug kingpin responsible for shooting their father. Michael runs away to Sicily right after to hide from the police and all the other threats, whereas Santino stays behind and is soon killed by the others.
Vito regains consciousness and decides to have a meeting with the heads of the other families and end this war. Michael returns and prepares to take over as the new Don. While the movie is long and seems slow-paced, it is undoubtedly a masterpiece!
Taking Everything Into Account,
So, you see, some movies really looked as if they morphed wonderfully from the pages of the book to the big screen. No doubt, there are many more that were done terribly which is why most of us are doubtful when watching such movies, however, that shouldn’t stop you from giving other movies a chance. After all, you never know when you come across a hidden treasure.
