Have you accepted your first job working on a construction site? Will you be performing general labour and want to be sure you not only make a great impression but stay safe in what can be a dangerous work environment? If so there are several steps you can and should embrace, as these rules, regulations, and tips can prevent a serious accident or injury from occurring. Let’s take a closer look.
Make Sure You Get Safety Training
Before you even start working on the site safety training should be provided. Health and safety training is mandatory and depending on the sector and the job, additional training may also be necessary. You need to know how to stay safe and what to do in case of an emergency. It sounds basic but it’s incredibly important.
If you have any questions or concerns, this is the time to voice them as you don’t want to take chances on a construction site.
Wear Hi-Vis Clothing at All Times
To stay safe as a construction worker, you need to be seen, and there is no better way to do that than by wearing high-visibility clothing. These are brightly coloured garments that will be easy to spot up close and from a distance. They may also have reflective strips if you are working in low light or night-time conditions.
Be sure to look for pieces that meet the UK standards and regulations, as well as your employer’s. The pieces should also be lightweight, breathable, and easy to wash. Hi-vis polo t-shirts are perfect if you’re working on construction sites during the warm spring and summer months.
Personal Protective Gear Is Incredibly Important
Along with hi-vis clothing, there is other protective gear that should be worn. This can include safety goggles, ear protection, helmets/hard hats, and even knee pads. This is something your employer can discuss with you in advance. Some may even provide the PPE to employees or it can be up to you to purchase it.
It should also be noted that if the PPE is compromised at all, for example, it becomes damaged, it needs to be replaced immediately.
Be Aware of Signage on the Job Site
Signs are used to post warnings for workers and even the public. Make sure you pay attention to them and adhere to the warning. On a construction site, you may see signs for turning vehicles, falling objects, chemicals or gas being used, and so forth.
Do a Visual Inspection of Your Equipment and Tools
Before you start each shift, it’s a good idea to check your equipment and tools thoroughly. You want to be sure everything is in good condition and doesn’t have damage or defects. Should you notice any problems, speak to your supervisor or the foreman, and don’t use the item.
Simple Steps Will Keep You Safe
Each of these steps is simple yet can do a great job of preventing accidents and injuries on a construction site. It’s your job to stay aware, be alert, and get the proper training.
