Ahmad Rashad was born Robert Earl Moore, Jr. in Portland, Oregon, USA, on 19 November 1949. He moved with his family to Tacoma, Washington, where he played high school football. Rashad graduated from Mount Tahoma High School and got an athletic scholarship to the University of Oregon, majoring in elementary education. He played football for the Ducks under coach Jerry Frei.
He got charged with felony theft in November 1970, to which he pled guilty. The charge got reduced to a misdemeanor in early 1971.
