Early Life

Samuel was brought into this world on the 21st of December in the year 1948. Washington, D.C. was his origin. However, Samuel was brought up in Chattanooga, Tenessee by his stringent grandmother. Later when Samuel turned 10 years old, the pair of grandmother and grandson was joined by Samuel’s mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth used to work in a factory. His father, Roy Henry Jackson used to stay far from them who later died due to insobriety. Samuel had a keen interest in movies since childhood and he used to watch movies at the local theatres. All the intricate messages encircling the black presence on the screen caught sight of Samuel.

Samuel went on to attend multiple schools. But he did his graduation from Riverside High School located in Chattanooga. Later, Samuel pursued his studies in marine biology from the Morehouse College situated in Atlanta, Georgia. To gain some extra credits for his class, Samuel got associated with a local acting team. This collaboration gave exposure to Samuel and he unexpectedly lucked into his passion for acting. Thereafter, Samuel opted to switch his field. Samuel was getting more engrossed in the black power campaigns held in the college. While studying in juniors, Samuel got kicked out of college for his stubborn protestation. The protest was for adding a black to the trustee bench and Samuel locked many of the board members for two days.

Personal

Samuel met LaTanya Richardson when he was studying at Morehouse College. Latanya is an actress as well as a producer of a sports channel. Samuel and LaTanya got united in wedlock in the year 1980. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Zoe in the year 1982. Later in the year 1982, the couple created a benevolent organization. And today, the trio is actively involved in philanthropy. Millions of dollars have been donated by them for Alzheimer’s, literacy, and equal opportunities. Samuel has also co-founded ‘Just Us Theatre’.

It is reported that Samuel has found traces of him being a part of the Benga people of Gabon. In 2019, he was conferred the citizenship of Gabon. In the year 1968, Samuel got involved in the cremation ceremony of Martin Luther King, Junior. He has also participated in the rally held in Memphis.

As said above, Samuel was accused of illegal doings and as a consequence of this; he was banned from the college for two years. Samuel was busy working as a social worker during this suspension period. When he came back after two years, he started studying for the Bachelor of Arts in Drama. He completed his graduation in the year 1972.

While staying in Atlanta, Samuel practiced the acting skills he learned from his college. He applied those skills in several theatre plays and television films. He then shifted to New York in the year 1976. He starred in ‘A soldier’s play’ in the year 1981, thereafter which, he got in touch with Spike who was a director. Spike offered several small roles to Samuel in movies such as School Daze, Do the right thing. This was the time Samuel sank in cocaine and heroin consumption. However, he was fortunate enough to enter the rehab center at the right time. He completed the entire rehab therapy and came out as an all-new Samuel.
