Early Life
Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo, better known as Alan Alda, was born on January 28, 1936, in New York City, New York. The original name of his father is Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D’Abruzzo but changed it to Robert Alda. He was a performer in the burlesque theatres, causing them to move around the United States for most of Alan’s childhood years. His mother’s name is Joan Browne and was a former beauty queen and a homemaker. Alan Alda has Irish and Italian ancestry. Their adopted surname is a blend of ALphonso and D’Abruzzo.
Alan acquired polio when he was only seven. To fight the illness, his parents gave him a painful treatment made by Sister Elizabeth Kenny. He went to Archbishop Stepinac High School. In college, he attended Fordham University and graduated with a degree in English in 1956.
During his junior year, Alda studied in Paris and participated in a play in Rome. He was a member of the ROTC during college and after graduating, served at the Fort Benning for a year. He also served through a tour duty in Korea for six months.

While he was at Fordham University, Alda met Arlene Weiss sometime in 1956. A year after he graduated, the two got married on March 15. The couple has three daughters named Beatrice, Elizabeth, and Eve. He has eight grandchildren and two of them are aspiring to work in the movie industry.

According to Alan, he was brought up as a Catholic; however, growing up, he slowly started to think like an atheist or an agnostic. Even so, he does not like to refer to himself as one.
